If you are really out of shape, begin iawklng your neighborhood until you can comfortably walk a couple of miles. Then add your backpack with a few pounds and repeat iawklng a couple of miles until you are comfortable. Continue to add weight to your backpack until you can comfortably carry 10 pounds or so. If your hike will be on rugged terrain, go to the local football stadium and walk/run the bleachers. This will get your knees ready for the ups and down of the trail. If you don't already have your hiking boots/shoes, get them and include them in your daily iawklng. It will break them in before you leave. Breaking in boots/hiking shoes on the trail is a sure-fire way to ruin a good hike. For more information about getting ready for your hike including information about how to lighten your pack (great for those of us in less-than-perfect condition) see the website below.Happy Hiking.
